A Shinigami Fable

The realm of the Shinigami is not what it was. As Death Gods, its inhabitants are hardly worthy of the name. Sloth Gods, more aptly. Oh, occasionally they remember to write a human name or two in their books in order to continue their decayed existence. But for the most part Shinigami lie about, or gamble, or sleep.

But recently they have begun to tell stories.

"Bright he was, like the morning star, and he dazzled the Shinigami from all that distance, so that the Shinigami let the Death Note fall from his hands into the hands of the bright one. And he was Lucifer, or, in the more common tongue, Light."

("Oh, balls. It didn't happen that way at all," Ryuk snorts, crunching away at his apple.)

"And with the Note, Light the Morningstar became the Deathbringer. He had lost his balance, so another was forced to rise to complete him and bring him back to balance. Because he was the second half of the Morningstar, his name was also Lucifer, shortened to L for ease."

("He was a misfit human who was more than a little batshit himself, you idiots." Ryuk picks a bit of apple skin from between his knife-blade teeth. "Those eyes. You think my eyes are scary? Ha.")

"Together they might have achieved balance. But then she came, and Light was torn further from balance because she desired him and wanted to be his completion. And she is always named twice, 'Misa, Misa,' for she was the beloved of not one but of two Shinigami, and we honor her for that."

("Can't think why." Ryuk swallows. "She wasn't nearly as interesting as some humans. Rem was a worse weakling than Gelus was, you ask me. What are we honoring weak Shinigami for?" "Ssssh," hisses one of the listening Death Gods.)

"Because she had been twice-loved by the Shinigami and twice-gifted with their Eyes, Misa, Misa could no longer see as well with her human eyes, and so could not see that L was the other half of Light, and could not love him."

("Nobody loved him. He had to handcuff himself to people to get dates. Doesn't that tell you something?" Ryuk cackles.)

"So Lucifer remained sundered. And the half of him known as L passed from that world, and the other half, Light, remained the Deathbringer, for Misa, Misa could not complete him. And those who recalled the glory of the Morningstar despaired, for only the Deathbringer earned worship in the human world."

("Humans eat dirt and they crap worship," Ryuk sniggers. "Most of them wouldn't know a real god if they...well, if they touched a friggin' Death Note.")

"Wisdom had not completed Light. Nor had love. It remained that only innocence could do this. And so the one who came to him as a little child held a mirror to what remained of Lucifer, and when Light saw himself reflected he was completed. But he could not stay in the human world, and passed beyond it to join his other half."

("Are you giving that other little weirdo credit for my kill? Are you shitting me?" howls Ryuk. "I wrote his name in my Death Note! He was mine by right! What are all of you doing, babbling your stupid stories and forgetting the rules of Shinigami?" He turns away from those gathered. "I can't take you assholes any longer. I'm going.")

"Meanwhile the human world waits. Waits for another, bright as Lucifer, who will dazzle a Shinigami and claim a Death Note, yet not be sundered. It is said that when that happens, Shinigami and human realm will become one, and who can say which of us, of them, will be gods in their true realm on that day."

"The realms become one," murmur some of the listeners.

"True gods," others whisper in fear.

Only one has a question. "Where," he puzzles, "exactly is Ryuk getting all those apples?"

No one answers him. Certainly not Ryuk.
