I come bearing fic because, obviously, when a story has two young male leads, they must be gay. PG Raito/L drabble.

"Impossible To Ignore"
“Can you open this?” asks L. His wide eyes have gone even wider, his voice is plaintive.
“Why?” Raito’s eyebrows arch as he surveys the little plastic case in L’s hands. He can see where it opens, how it opens. Opening boxes isn’t supposed to be rocket science, though the two of them are supposed to be studying for a physics exam. In reality, L is gnawing pencils and probably coming up with ways to pin Raito as Kira while Raito is trying very hard to block out L’s frenzied scribbling.
He's impossible to ignore.
L rocks back and forth in his seat as he shows his well-bitten nails to Raito. “Because I can’t,” he says simply. “I can’t do everything, you know.”
“I know,” says Raito, opening the case and tossing it back to the black-haired boy, who catches it with a sudden burst of motion, like a jack-in-the-box popping out of its home.
He does his best to block out the boy, he really does, but they have almost all of their classes together; their hours at the university are mostly spent together in lecture halls and seminars. L never listens to the professors, Raito notices. Instead, he rocks back and forth in his chair, nibbling away at his nails, gazing out windows, typing away at a frantic pace. Sometimes, he stares at Raito, who never fails to notice L’s half-dreamy gaze. It’s not as though Raito’s paying attention, either. When he sits behind L in a lecture hall, he lets his eyes wander to the other boy, to his messy black hair, to his wide eyes, to his lean frame, coiled like a spring, just waiting to jump into motion.
L is a very tricky person to ignore.
It’s even harder to disregard the other boy when they both end up making excuses to follow each other around. Raito tells himself he’s keeping an eye on L, and has no doubts that L is just trying to keep tabs on him. They play tennis regularly, drawing a crowd of the campus’s sports fans and the beginnings of an unofficial fan club. The spectators are easy to overlook.
But, no matter how hard Raito tries, L cannot be ignored.
A few days ago, Ryuuku perched on the cafeteria counter and laughed as told Raito in no uncertain terms that his obsession was getting unhealthy. Raito ignored the shinigami and handed an apple to L. Ryuuku had been sullen ever since.
Raito gives up on physics for the moment and watches L openly as the black-haired boy skims enormous textbooks, then tosses them carelessly to the floor. L has been attracting attention since the commencement ceremony at the start of term with his rumpled appearance, his insane pseudonym, his tennis skills, his perfect scores. Raito isn’t just jostling with L in the race to find Kira; they’re in competition every day for grades on tests and papers.
This, of course, just makes him harder to ignore.
Bemusedly, L looks up and gives a little wave, then goes back to nibbling on a fingernail and reading what appears to be a dictionary. Raito stands and walks out of the library, leaving wild, energetic L behind him. The face haunts him the bus, onto the street, into his home – wide eyes, curly hair, small smile.
Even at home, he just can’t be ignored.
Sayu has the television on; criminals’ faces and names flash across the screen. A panel begins to blather about Kira and L, but Raito is already storming up the stairs. He has enough trouble banishing thoughts of L without “professionals” ranting on about him. Even as he tries to focus on the Death Note and the latest criminals’ faces, L still comes to mind. Because he’s next, Raito tells himself.
The truth is, he’s just impossible to ignore.

re: curly hair. That reminds me that L seems quite different before and after #11. It worries me that this L I know and love might actually not be L... Hope it's just an Obata-sensei bug. -_-
re: "obviously, when a story has two young male leads, they must be gay". But I can't help when they have such a competitive-tense-mutually insincere-sparks flying everywhere relationship!

Gah! I was wondering about that. I remembered my first impression of L as having curly hair, but didn't remember it being curly later on, and I was *coughs* writing this in the middle of a Teen Titans marathon and was too lazy to look at L's hair. It is weird, though, isn't it? I'm not hallucinating -- right? L's hair has gotten straighter?
But I can't help when they have such a competitive-tense-mutually insincere-sparks flying everywhere relationship!

Your L is so, what's the word, light. Your Raito is less crazy violence and more that Hikaru face he makes in the first couple of chapters, and aw, I like it so much.
