What we hope to do
We want to create a Death Note fansite geared towards consolidation of essays on the characters and their motivations, with less emphasis on speculation.
Why we want to do it
We believe that majority of the Death Note fandom, which revolves around speculation of future or "behind-the-scenes" events, is time-dependent and easily becomes dated. The more enduring aspects of the manga lie in the selfish motivations of the morally dubious main characters and how they affect the people around them, and we wish to consolidate this aspect for the perusal of fans regardless of the stage of development of the manga itself.
We hope to also draw audiences who would otherwise view the manga as mere entertainment by convincing them of the literary value of Death Note, which is found, again, in the characters and their motivations.
How we hope to do it
The site will contain essays for each important character in Death Note, depending largely on the content available from the fandom. We hope that fans may contribute the essays that will comprise the content of the site.
Tentatively, the characters will be divided loosely by their roles in the manga: the killers, the detectives, the reapers, and the minor characters. The characters will have their respective webpages that will feature links to the articles that have been written about them.
Eventually, we hope to have a running community which can discuss the essays in question, or the more general themes in the manga. We also hope that the website may utilize cookies in such a way that respective users can select the chapters they have read up to, and only the relevant portions will show up to them, such that the site may be accessible not only to fans who have been reading with accordance to the Japanese publishing.
What we need
We are only three Death Note-lovers who want to see the conception of this site, but we definitely cannot do it by ourselves.
We implore that fans who can code or design websites, write or edit essays, or otherwise support this project in any way possible please help to make this site possible. Much of this proposal is very tentative and is highly subject to change. Your support will be very much appreciated.
Your comments/questions/thoughts/criticisms please! :)
Edit: Almost forgot - we're also suggesting having a section for art analyses (panelling, character designs, etc.), too, which is another aspect of fandom that's highly neglected.
